Walter S. DeKeseredy, Anna Deane Carlson Endowed Chair of Social Sciences and sociology professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at West Virginia University, has been awarded the prestigious Critical Criminal Justice Scholar Award by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
The award honors a scholar for distinguished accomplishments in scholarship, teaching or service over at least a two-year period.
DeKeseredy has published 19 books and more than 160 scientific journal articles and book chapters on violence against women and other topics. His most recent empirical work has focused on the enhanced dangers and risks of intimate partner violence for women in rural settings compared to women in urban or suburban settings seeking to end relationships.
“I am deeply honored by this award and very excited about receiving it during the start of my tenure at WVU,” said DeKeseredy, who joined the department in January.
“My immediate goal is to work with colleagues in the Department of Sociology to create an interdisciplinary center for research on violence and to generate path-breaking studies of timely social problems that have an impact on policy and practice.”
Advocacy for suffering individuals, specifically those who cannot safely speak for themselves, also remains a priority for DeKeseredy who recently campaigned against what he called an “inauthentic and deceptive attempt” to degenderize domestic violence in Canada.
In 1995, he received the Critical Criminologist of the Year Award from the American Society of Criminology’s Division on Critical Criminology, and in 2008 the organization awarded him its lifetime achievement award. He also jointly received the 2004 Distinguished Scholar Award from the American Society of Criminology’s Division on Women and Crime and the 2007 inaugural University of Ontario Institute of Technology Research Excellence Award.
He was the 2008 award recipient of the Linda Saltzman Memorial Intimate Partner Violence Researcher Award by the Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma.
