2023 WVU VALUES Coin Designs

The following designs were created with input from prior WVU Values Coin recipients. Vote for your favorite below.

Design A features WV's state motto of "Montani Semper Liberi" with a mountain landscape background

Design A

Montani Semper Liberi (Latin for "Mountaineers are Always Free") was adopted as West Virginia’s motto when the state constitution was signed in 1872. This simple statement is a source of strength at West Virginia University as students, faculty and staff are encouraged to think and act beyond boundaries as they move mountains in pursuit of their purpose.

Design B features WV's state bird - a red cardinal drawn with geometric shapes

Design B

The northern cardinal, known for its stunning crimson hue and standing out among other birds, became West Virginia’s state bird in 1949. The geometric cardinal featured in this design represents the diverse individuals that form a thriving WVU community that uses their collective strengths to make the world a better place.

Design C features an esoteric-style eye surrounded by wavy design elements

Design C

Curiosity is one of West Virginia University’s core values and encourages students, faculty and staff to ask questions, seek new opportunities and change through innovation. The abstract eye featured in this coin design represents the opportunity and willingness to search for meaning, communicate unique points of view and harness creativity.
